The fantastic 19th-century buildings in Rio de Janeiro's neighbourhood of Lapa are home to bars, restaurants and steamy samba halls, most famously Rio Scenarium, which began as one of many antiques stores also in the area.

Mercado Moderno, just a few doors down, headed in the opposite direction. Originally a hip nightspot, after an extensive refit in 2005, it reopened as Rio's best vintage 20th-century furniture store.

The stock is determinedly mid-century, with a heavy accent on excellent local designers like Sergio Rodrigues and Ricardo Fasanello, all expertly restored to original condition.
