Brazil's retail landscape is a vast combination of tradition, convention and innovation. Virtually all of the country’s major cities all contain charming, historic public markets and surprisingly sophisticated shopping malls, both as much social centres of gravity as shopping destinations.
But São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in particular are home to a dizzying array of dynamic independent boutiques and flagship concept stores, fuelled by incredibly talented domestic designers, visionary entrepreneurs and more recently, a booming economy that enables a rapidly growing, and innately semi-shopaholic consumer base.
Now that Brazil has captured the world's attention as its hottest market, foreigners too will find that the retail sector, like the country itself, is full of pleasant surprises.
