Thanks to Mulberry's new flagship space, the most perfect example of dry stone walling this side of Yorkshire can now be found on New Bond Street. Eschewing more traditionally urban elements, such as exposed brick and spotlighting, in favour of long-lasting materials, fine British craftsmanship and daylight-simulating, energy-conserving light boxes, the store is a result of a two-year collaboration with Universal Design Studio. With its nude leather shelves, beautifully irregular raw porcelain tiles, 8.7m-long brass cash desk, and crafted oak 'follies' - structures that can be moved around to redefine the space season to season - the interior is as tactile and inviting as the products on sale. A major source of pride for the brand is the building's environmental credentials. Mulberry and Universal have worked closely with consulting engineers Max Fordham to put in place an intelligent, ongoing energy monitoring system to make sure the interior fittings - as well as the customers - can be as efficient as possible in terms of consumption. The result? A breath of what feels quite like fresh air in central London.
