Looking more like a set from a Lady Gaga video than a shop, Koichiro Kimura's new Tokyo HQ is as much about experiencing his sensational furniture and tableware designs in a futuristic setting as it is about buying them. Kimura, a former punk turned designer and lacquerware master, has transformed a twostorey 1950s house in upscale Aoyama into a white palace fronted by a large gold pyramid. With a hot pink back wall providing the only splash of colour, the groundfloor shop is filled with products ranging from tableware to a sculptural gold USB stick. Upstairs, the walls and ceilings of the showroom are covered with 4,000 white lacquered pyramids, a signature shape of the designer. The scion of a famous Sendai family that has been in the lacquerware business for more than 400 years, Kimura seamlessly combines ancestral techniques with his unique contemporary take on the art.
