Hibiya Kadan

Tokyo

With 180 outlets throughout Japan and known for its austere orchid arrangements, Hibiya Kadan is the florist’s florist. Its latest shop, in Tokyo’s central Hibiya Park, on the edge of the Imperial Palace grounds, is a jewel. Designed by architect Kumiko Inui as an elegant park pavilion, the shop comprises five 7.5 m high structures linked by narrow corridors. Sheathes of tall glass are set off by stone claddings and bare concrete floors. Inui says she was inspired by the comfort of the shade of a tree and, indeed, at times, it’s difficult to tell where the shop interior ends and the garden exterior begins. ‘Inside the shop one still feels outdoors,’ she says. With a building that wows visitors this much, you expect floristry work of the highest standard, and Hibiya Kadan delivers, offering unparalleled treats for the house-proud maven and old-fashioned romantics alike.
