Spilling over four floors, the sumptuous new MaxMara flagship in Milan is definately worth a stopover. Coordinated by Duccio Grassi Architects, the radical restyling has transformed the old headquarters. Frameless floor to ceiling windows flood the store with light and provide a dramatic stage for the collection – the clean lines of the clothes are set off perfectly against the sky-high ceilings and plain walls. Dramatically dividing the space is a burnished copper spiral staircase, leading you in style to the upper floors and more shopping splendour. Utterly different yet equally divine is ‘The Basement’, home to the Weekend and denim collections, and some design pieces. The bold graphics and bright colours are a refreshing change from the achingly chic and slightly staid upper levels.
