Anyone with a passing knowledge of Stockholm’s retail scene knows of Svenskt Tenn. But there’s now reason to potter a little further down the road to the new, improved Malmstenbutiken. Carl Malmsten first opened his doors back in 1940. And despite always being a more understated affair than its famous neighbour, Malmstenbutiken’s quiet charm had been crying out for an update since Malmsten’s death in 1972. Happily, Malmsten’s grandson, Jerk, who bought the premises in 1999, reopened the store this February, after an 18-month complete refurbishment. With the help of local architects Leo Johansson and Stefan Borselius, Malmsten has given the 300-sqm space a new lease of life. A central outdoor area has been converted into an exhibition space flooded with natural light, whilst downstairs has more of a museum feel and is dedicated to Carl Malmsten’s furniture archive. White walls unite the spaces and provide a neutral backdrop for the timeless, traditional Swedish furniture and pieces by local brands such as Vaxbo Lin, BSweden and Gustavsburg. ‘Our aim is to let every visitor feel that we have been around for a long time and show that we plan to stay around even longer,’ says Malmsten.
