Issey Miyake

Paris

Sandwiched between Place de la Concorde and Rue Saint-Honoré is Issey Miyake’s gleaming new European flagship. Designed by local architect Jean-Guillaume Mathiaut of Atelier Edith the store is in impressive recreation of a Japanese atelier – all white, geometric Corian blocks, basking under the incorporated LED lighting against a raw, concrete floor. It’s impressive not just for its immaculate aesthetic but because the initial space was something of a hotchpotch of numerous alterations from previous occupants, leaving quite a complex canvas for the architect to work on. That the whole store was completed in just five months is proof of how quickly retail design moves – a case of where there’s a till, there’s a way.
