The charming sign on the door of Ingo Maurer’s new space in Munich’s Kaiserstrasse reads studioshowroomwerkstattatelier, as the 700 sqm space serves as a shop for consumers, a showroom for architects and designers and a place to commission special lighting projects that are becoming increasingly important for the designer and his 70-odd team, who work in the adjacent studios. Housed in a turn-of-the-last-century laundry (complete with impressive brick chimney), just off the street, the space was most recently used for Maurer’s in-house production, now relocated outside of the city. Maurer has opened up the space and left it pretty raw, leaving the lighting rightfully as the main focus. In addition to the 110 or so examples displayed from the standard collection including the paper Zettel’z, porcelain Porca Miseria and the bulb-with-wings Lucellino, both levels also house around 25 one-off works like Rose, Rose on the Wall, made of 900 custom made circuit boards laid like tiles around a fireplace. This is first time that so much of Maurer’s work has been shown together (usually you get to see just a few at a time at a trade fair like Milan’s Salone del Mobile), and even if you are not shopping for lamps or in the market for municipal illumination, keep plenty of time for a visit, its nothing less than a delight.
