Hugo Boss

New York

When Hugo Boss asked Matteo Thun to design a new concept shop in New York’s Meatpacking District that would showcase all of its brands under one roof, the Milan-based architect drew inspiration from the site’s gritty past. Leaving the original concrete structure virtually intact—including the concrete floors, brick face walls, and original industrial columns— Thun constructed a floor to ceiling lattice-like structure made of white oak. The delicate endoskeleton is an unexpected visual contrast to the raw main space. Lighting designer A.J. Weissbard created a dramatic starry sky with small LED lights placed at strategic points along the lattice work. This can be programmed to create differently lit moods. While the front space is considerably more austere—severely geometric lacquered displays and leather and glass showcases—Weissbard’s symphony of lighting softens the mood. Meanwhile, the dressing rooms at the back are lush, filled with area rugs, red velvet drapes, mirrors, Chesterfield chairs and ottomans, and topped by a golden ceiling.
