Whilst Dries Van Noten’s premier Japanese retail outing, with its East-meets-West approach may seem decidedly tried and tested - the pan-Asian retail experience on offer is in fact rather unique. With 280 square meters spread over two floors in Tokyo’s Aoyama region, Van Noten’s interior vision was given ample room for manoeuvre. Combining typical Antwerpian sobriety with more animated Eastern features, Van Noten offers followers from both sides of the pacific an understatedly eclectic experience. With a verdant, lime green lounge area, hand-knotted carpets and lightwood fittings, Van Noten’s subtle embellishments stand out against the vaulting achromatic walls. Despite a pair of Baroque-era old masters hanging conspicuously from the ceilings (and several strange mini-televisions), Van Noten, in typically enigmatic style, still manages to direct all attention to the main event – the clothes.
