Information
Founded in 1997 by Andreas Schmitzer, 41, the studio was joined by partner Maria Planegger, 40, in 2001. Project A01 began its current incarnation in 2004, with the intention of focusing the office on larger scale structures as well as private houses. Both architects studied in Vienna, while Schmitzer also spent time at architecture school in Michigan, USA. Their office is currently 10 strong, with about 25 projects on the go right across Europe.

Inspiration
Technology is a major source of inspiration for Project A01, who strive to include innovations from other fields (although they admit that cross-over is inevitably a slow process, with architecture lagging behind). Nonetheless, ideas like a transparent, highly insulated façade have been developed in conjunction with local research labs. Recent work has included a high-tech factory for remote controlled surveillance helicopters.
Innovation
Their beginnings in interior design enables the office to offer a complete package, right down to the furnishings, giving Project A01’s output a visual coherence that even the most experience studio struggles to deliver. That said, Schmitzer and Planegger are adamant that 'good architecture' also depends on ensuring what they call 'found environments' are used to the very best advantage. Light - both artificial and natural - also comes in for special scrutiny. Their recently completed Klosterneuburg Residence, just outside Vienna, is a modernist house in the spirit of a grand mansion, a multi-levelled structure that reaches out into its surrounding landscaping.
