PROFILE

Croatian Zoka Zola, a Zagreb University and Architectural Association graduate, set up the practice in Chicago in 2002 with the Pfanner House project. Finding inspiration in paintings and sculpture for their residential, commercial, education and urban projects, Zola and her team also study other architects’ work, in order to “learn from it and to make better assumptions about our own projects’. In the search of “thrill, excitement and pleasure’ in architecture, Zola nurtures a true fascination for the possibilities of architecture, which she practices, embracing and re-evaluating constantly technological innovations and the changing social patterns.

Scalene House

Designed with the playful use of the number three in mind, Scalene House sits on three columns, which hold three beams that in turn hold three slabs. A triangular-shaped courtyard springs from the slabs’ arrangement. The house sits lightly on the ground and the load-bearing columns allow for an equally light and free open plan interior. Open to all directions, the structure gets double exposure to light and air via the courtyard too. Zola designed the house elevated to also allow for the ground level space to be able to facilitate different uses, from a small shop to a parking space. ‘The house thus has the ability to facilitate income for its inhabitants and contribute to social and economical exchanges in its rural context’, she adds.
