Established in Vienna in 1999, with offices now in Stuttgart and Beirut, Najjar & Najjar is run by brothers Karim and Rames. Their work embraces everything from conceptual work to commercial spaces, with materials research at the heart of their activity. Working alongside manufacturers and a broad swathe of the design industry, including boat building, bridge engineering and hospitality design, Najjar & Najjar's work is best described as contemporary high-tech, often organic in inspiration, but always with a hard, digital edge. That their work should spill over into yacht design is no surprise.
Tidal House is a proposal for a floating building, a mixture of sculpture, boat and retreat. Intended as an urban riverside retreat that can be simply towed upstream to a more contemplative spot when the urge arises, the Tidal House is a mollusc-like structure that can open and close depending on the activity inside and the nature of its surroundings. As the name suggests, the living environment reacts to the height of the tide – 'the times of nature determine the abode and the activity of people inside.' From resting on the sea floor at low tide, open and accessible, the house rises with the waters and closes its protective shell, becoming a place that is only reachable by boat.
