BIOGRAPHY AND PRACTICE

One half of SPG, Caroline N. Sidnam, was already heading her own firm since the 1980s, before Eric Gartner joined the practice, finally becoming partner is 1994. SPG have worked in a big variety of projects, ranging from residential - condominium apartments, urban townhouses, second homes, freestanding houses and residential compounds - to commercial projects for clients like Polo Ralph Lauren, Time Warner, Calvin Klein and COTY beauty. Closely following contemporary architecture and technological developments, the team explores design beyond current trends, offering a timeless aesthetic and researching the fundamental architectural ideas and the client’s needs.

THE HOUSE

The house SPG designed for this year’s Directory is attached to a specific site, which the architects find particularly intriguing. The plot for Sherman House is indeed in Sherman, CT, in a steep challenging site, meaning that the house is tucked into the hillside, underneath a green roof. The linear plan opens up views towards the Connecticut Berkshire Mountains. SPG have achieved minimal street presence for the house, blurring the boundaries between natural and man-made.

THE FUTURE

SPG's project ideas are drawn largely from each project's site and the client's requirements and desires. The team aims to play even more with new technologies and the juxtaposition of industrial and natural materials, constantly looking for new architectural opportunities, especially in the current economic climate. The exploration of environmental and ecological architecture is also on the top of their list, as is the expansion of their portfolio to institutional and community buildings.
