BIOGRAPHY AND PRACTICE
Describing themselves as an architecture and spatial design consultancy, Anagram Architects were founded in New Delhi in July 2001 by Madhav Raman and Vaibhav Dimri, both in their early 30s. Raman and Dimri graduated from the city's School of Planning and Architecture in 2001. As well as traditional architectural practice, Anagram is also involved in design for film, television and theatre, installation art and planning.
Working to bring together environmental construction and responsible lifestyles, the duo write that their practice 'is based on a philosophy of holistic sustainability that responds to the economic, socio-cultural and environmental contours of the project,' say the duo, 'it is something we like to call Ecology Redux.'
THE HOUSE
The Interstice-2 house is intended for construction in peri-urban Delhi, a place of zero planning, high densities and highly variable quality of life. Suggesting that future urbanisation of such plots is 'inevitable', the Interstice-2 project contains two independent residences, enveloped by a structural exo-skeleton and contained within two 'vegetal façades', irrigated by a traditional Indian bavdi, or stepwell, to create a combination of shared community resource, social space and introverted private rooms.
THE FUTURE
Happy to go outside their comfort zone and deal with unfamiliar programmes, they draw inspiration from the old and new, the exotic and the mundane, although the work of H & de M and Sou Fujimoto comes in for high praise.
