House reconstruction in Corsica, 2006

Antonini + Darmon

Architects Directory 2008

Laetitia Antonini (33) and Tom Darmon (30) established their Paris-based studio in 2006. Both had studied together at the Ecole d’architecture de Paris Val de Seine, before working for a variety of French architecture firms, so an official partnership was a natural move. Antonini also had a stint at the American office Arquitectonica. Their long-term collaboration resulted in a series of projects realised before the studio was officially founded, like the transformation of a run-down rural structure in Corsica into an austere small house. 'We try as much as possible to find our inspiration elsewhere than in architecture,' says Darmon. However, they prefer work by the more stylistically plural members of the international architecture scene, including SANAA, Herzog & de Meuron, Claus en Kaan, Fuhrimann Hachler and Jun Aoki, as well as the varied output of modernist Marcel Breuer.

Context plays a big role in shaping the studio's output. That said, the architects describe themselves as 'polymorphous', on a quest to turn every building into an 'aesthetic object.' Recent works include an apartment conversion in central Paris, with a central piece of multi-functional furniture designed as a 'contemporary interpretation' of the work of Charlotte Perriand. The Russian Doll apartment, an un-built project, proposed a series of interlocking functional areas inserted into a large open-plan space. Larger apartment building studies have taken a more monolithic approach, crisp white façades hiding buildings that eke out every last inch of urban space.
