Luke Ogrydziak and Zoë Prillinger set up their firm in San Francisco in 2000. After both studying at Princeton, the architects, both 37, kept a foothold in academia with visiting professorships at UC Berkeley. Taking each project as a detailed enquiry into methodologies and approaches, the studio finds its best work comes through clients who ‘are able to tap into their own personal interests and tendencies – pathologies if you will.’ These pathologies work on the project from the inside, determining the programme and form. Underpinning this approach is a rigorous system of digital design, allowing every project to be modelled down to the last detail, and ‘opening up the field of possible geometries. Surrounded by a library’s worth of monographs, manuals and tracts, they draw inspiration from theory and conceptual art. ‘The only way to understand the current moment is to try and interrogate how we got here’.

‘Residential architecture will probably always remain a great 'lab' for us,’ they say, describing architecture as an expressive medium. Their armoury of customised modelling programs means that they’re well-equipped to push the envelope with each and every project. The Kayak House has a serene position on the banks of the American River in Lotus, California; a classic spot for kayaking. Happily the client had a passion for the outdoors, and the generously sized house turns its public face to the rushing river, retaining a more private feel on the rear forest-facing façade. Exposed, rough-edge materials like steel and plywood give the interior a utilitarian, ready-for-anything feel, combined with a luxurious amount of space and light generated by vast windows and double-height spaces. A bright blue garage door - the only tone used on the exterior - mimics the colour of the owner's favourite kayak.
