Courtyard House II project

Super Colossal

Architects Directory 2008

Thirty-year old Marcus Trimble founded Super Colossal last year, after graduating from the University of Sydney and then working as an Associate at BVN. Now leading the Australia-based practice, Trimble is aiming to create good, simple and strong architecture. ‘We are interested in the singular, in the robust and producing spatial complexity through simple moves’, he explains. Inspiration comes in many forms and from different sources for the Super Colossal team; from blogs, like BLDGBLOG, Pruned and City of Sound, to comic books, like Akira, Ronin and the fresh air of Invincible, and to the writing of JG Ballard and Grant Morrison. In regards to design, Muji and Aesop packaging hit the top of Trimble’s favourites list.

Watson’s Bay House project
Having numerous projects on the drawing board and a few awaiting approvals, the practice is getting busier by the day. Their work is varied, even including a cardboard cubby house, but all designs feature a common aesthetic of simplicity and elegance. ‘We like architecture typified by Aires Mateus and Atelier Bow Wow, that is, those practices that favour clarity and invention’ Trimble admits. Looking at his designs, his approach makes perfect sense.
