This seven-storey 1920s hotel has a feel somewhere between a sought-after, scaled-down apartment and an Old Shanghai mansion. Rooms are a comfortable mix of the fashionable and the local: stained oak wall panelling and bespoke wallpaper by Kin-Wah Tsang combine with pieces by the likes of Hans Wegner, Antonio Citterio and Patricia Urquiola. The lobby has been given an eclectic Chinese feel by Andre Fu of AFSO. Smoky green velvets, dark chocolate Chinese lacquer, crocodile leather, and dark timber panels make for a rich décor. Living room-like in layout, with nightly cocktails and afternoon tea and cake, the lobby’s most memorable feature is a series of black lacquer birdcages in the double-height entrance.
