Hamburg

Having lain vacant for a quarter of a century, an iconic water tower dating from 1910 has joined Hamburg’s growing roster of once-derelict industrial structures turned outré hotels. Located in the Sternschanzen Park in edgy Schanzenviertel, the brick-clad octagonal building is accessed through a partially buried entrance landscaped with stonework, and then via a 25m-long subterranean moving walkway. The rooms, spread over 17 floors, are decorated in soft earthy tones and feature zebrano partitions. Each room has stunning panoramas, but the best views are from the two rooftop Tower Suites, 60m up.
