Boston

This historical building started life as the Charles Street Jail in 1851. The last of the prisoners departed in 1990 and, more recently, architects Cambridge Seven Associates set to work to transform the decrepit building into a contemporary hotel – opened in 2007 – while retaining its sense of history. In the lobby, for example, are vestiges of jail cells alongside art and modern lighting fixtures. The rooms are appointed in tones of pale rose and taupe, accented with mahogany woods and touches of stainless steel. This slick hotel exudes energy, but with Boston style. It is located in the heart of the Beacon Hill neighbourhood, near the world’s best medical complexes.
