Therese Vandling

Graduate Directory 2008

Therese Vandling could almost have come under any of our graduate categories. She works in a host of mediums, but has reconciled her artwork as existing somewhere in between illustration and graphics. Similarly, her style is a mixed bag; she was moved to become a designer via a fascination for 1960s hand-drawn typography and lately, inspired by Kant's theories on aesthetics, she’s been looking into the simultaneous dichotomy and closeness of ugliness and beauty, normality and abnormality.

Right now, she’s into 1960s Polish poster painters, though there is some evidence of Dali-esque influences in her highly surreal images. 'There might not be a commercial aspect to my work', reflects Vandling. Well, her final project did consist of a set of books, screen printed posters of a contemporary grotesque ornamental typeface and a three-dimensional exquisite corpse. But on the flip side, as well as recently exhibiting at MAKE, she has also contributed to Lowlife, MySpace and this very magazine.

Would most like to work with:
'I'd love to work with musicians, writers and creative people of other disciplines. My all-time hero and bottomless source of inspiration is Dieter Roth.'
