'Space for Contemplation' project

Katrine Kastberg

Graduate Directory 2008

Although we applaud architecture that strives to break boundaries in terms of form, we are avid believers that function is also of paramount importance. It is from a similar stance that Katrine Kastberg approaches architecture, which she describes as an industry in which she can ‘work with sculpture in a context where it has a function.’

Through her explorations into how design and function relate, Kastberg has developed an interest as to how light is used in the shaping of space, which she contributes partly to her time spent studying the topic at the Helsinki University of Technology.

As part of a network of professionals who are interested in the impact of light on our daily lives and its integration in design and architecture, Kastberg is determined to experiment with this architectural element that she finds so rewarding.

Would most like to work with:
'Peter Zumtor for the elegant way he uses light to emphasise the quality of materials; and Tadao Ando, for the fascinating way he uses light in association with religious buildings.'
