'Living Arrangements, No 4'

Penny Klepuszewska

Graduate Directory 2008

Penny Klepuszewska's career has come full circle. As a child, she was almost never without a camera, but in the intervening years, her allegiance switched to the dramatic - she joined a Polish theatre company - before returning to her first love. And it makes sense that Klepuszewska should have seen something of life; its observance feeds directly back into her body of work.

Take, for instance, her graduation project, 'Living Arrangements'. The work explored the findings of a report which suggested that one in 10 elderly people regularly do not see a single person over the course of a day. 'The home is often regarded as a place of shelter but for some in later life it can become a place of inescapable isolation,' elucidates Klepuszewska.

Her insightful project has not gone unnoticed; it went go on show at Tate Britain’s first major photographic exhibition, How We Are Photographing Britain, last year. But for Klepuszewska, being alone has its appeal: 'The two things I really love about photography are the experiences you have whilst photographing your subject, and the isolation of working on my own.'

Would most like to work with:
'I would like to experience working on the epic and filmic scale of a Gregory Crewdson or Gregor Schneider project.'
