In a buzzing metropolis like Hong Kong, where bigger is often considered better, the avant-garde Maison Martin Margiela instead chose a small pre-war building as the location for its flagship.
Its simple façade is inconspicuous, but, like its other stores around the world, the boutique's three-floor interior has been given the full Martin Margiela treatment by the in-house design team and displays all the quirks we've come to expect from the Belgian label. Dotted around are cans of paint, yards of white cloth and even a large worktable, making it feel almost unfinished, yet, on the ground floor, a giant silver 'M', lying on its side, reaffirms that you are in a Margiela store. Old tiles from the original building line the alcove where the shoe collections are displayed, while a large pile of grey rugs form seats that customers can sit on.
On the men's floor, old-fashioned travelling trunks and belted suitcases, painted in Margiela's signature white, are used as display cases and shelving, subtly referencing the city's colonial history. The women's floor is the only overt nod to the designer's futuristic vision, awash in silver, with a metallic staircase and glittering mosaic walls.
