Mumbai

A relocation from its original premises (a leafy lane in a residential part of Mumbai) to an unconventional site beneath the benches of the famous Wankhede cricket stadium helps attest to the innovative nature of Bungalow 8.

The new 4,000 sq ft store, designed by one of India's finest architects, Bijoy Jain, has expanded on the store's core philosophy of fusing opposites to produce unexpected results. The novel space, featuring exposed concrete walls, is envisioned as an avant-garde home, with a broad selection of mid-century furniture pieces providing the setting for the store's contemporary products. Sourced from all over India and East Asia, these include art deco cupboards stacked with linens and Jaisalmer bathroom accessories displayed on vintage basins and bathtubs.

But the store's greatest strength is the vision of its owner, Maithili Ahluwalia, whose pioneering spirit introduced the Indian shopper to niche retail. In its new incarnation, Bungalow 8 shows itself to be a defiantly city-specific store making a social contribution. At a time when homogenous shopping malls have become the favoured playgrounds of Mumbai's moneyed, this outlet offers an intimate retail experience that is unique and individual in the city.
