Royal Copenhagen has just completed a major refurbishment of its flagship store. Local architects Dorte Mandrup cut double height spaces behind the listed facade and elsewhere inside the building, which dates from 1616, but maintained key original features.
Design elements throughout celebrate the resplendent decoration that is part of the brand's DNA. Second floor bridges crossing the voids below have railings cut with the chrysanthemum from the company's well-known Blue Fluted pattern (favoured by Arne Jacobsen). In the Flora Danica room, Koln-based artist Wouter Dolk has decorated the walls by hand. Wooden floors have been stained blue (the same colour as the company's three-wave insignia) and a giant light installation by British artist Margaret O'Rorke is made of porcelain produced by Royal Copenhagen's artisans in the nearby factory.
Cabinets have been specially designed with mirrored interiors, so the signatures of the painters who decorated the ceramic pieces by hand are visible in the reflections. Niels Bastrup, the recently appointed creative director of the brand, has brought on board artists like Wouter Dolk, with whom he is also developing a new service called Sweet Pea, as well as additions to the historical Flora Danica service.
