London

When Sheridan Coakley first opened his contemporary furniture shop over 20 years ago in East London, it was given a rather frosty greeting. For a nation caught up on antiques and only just starting to feed on IKEA, the idea of high-end contemporary design was hard to swallow.

Yet Coakley persisted and became the first UK importer of Phillippe Starck's products, bought in Modernist pieces from Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and Alvar Aalto and championed new items from young (at the time) British designers such as Matthew Hilton, Tom Dixon and Jasper Morrison.

Today, SCP stands proud and as testament to its success has just opened a second boutique, on the other side of London, on Westbourne Grove. Designed by architects Munkenbeck and Marshall, the light, minimal and simple space allows Coakley's carefully edited furniture and accessories to shine.
