New York

The new Madison Avenue Roger Vivier store takes its design cues - design orchestration is by French jeweller Herve van der Straeten - from the celebrated cobbler’s domestic arrangements. Which is, largely, not a bad thing. Vivier clearly had a fondness for mid-century furniture, mirrors, large rugs and Napoleonic-era commodes (we’re not sure about the commodes).

But it makes shopping here a little like visiting the apartment of a cultured, wealthy and never-married Parisian uncle. No bad thing. The shoes (Vivier insisted on the term ‘footwear’) themselves, now designed by Bruno Frissoni, are displayed, as artefacts, in perspex boxes. The store also boasts a couture salon where the truly well-heeled can get fitted for custom-made shoes. Sorry, footwear.
