Los Angeles

Thirteen years after opening in New York’s Soho, Murray Moss, arguably the world’s foremost design retailer, has opened in Los Angeles. Moss, who designed the space himself, decided to join two identical shops together, which required a giant 21-metre long beam.

Taking full advantage of the span, and the almost symmetrical square box he created, he added a galvanized steel ceiling grid strong enough to hang a car off. More likely they will hang the odd Swarovski Crystal Chandelier and mount Dieter Ram’s 606 Universal Shelving System.

Moss is conscious of creating an environment right for the city, like the billboard-sized Moss logos in white neon that sit in glass cases behind each window, designed specifically to be viewed when whizzing past in a car. His approach is ‘very theatrical’ he believes its ‘perfect for LA, because everyone works in entertainment’.

Whilst Moss in New York is a gallery-cum-retailer, Los Angeles, at least for now, will be more of a gallery space showing limited edition works by the likes of Maarten Baas, Studio Job and Fernando and Humberto Campana.
