Information
PLY Architecture is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan and headed up by Craig Borum and Karl Daubmann, both of whom teach at the University of Michigan. PLY was established in 1999 with the intention of putting ideas into action through built form. As a ‘research practice,’ they reject the ‘routines of professional practice’ and embrace ‘continuous reinvention’.

Inspiration
'Inspiration comes from many and varied sources, as is the nature of any good partnership,' they say, singling out a good meal, passionate architects old and new, and skilful use of technology as especially intriguing, along with the work of Isamu Noguchi, the Eames and the Albers.
Innovation
The technology developed by auto makers is now seeping into architectural practice, PLY believes, thanks to the economic instability of the motor industry. ‘This has allowed us to engage avenues of material research through digital fabrication techniques,’ they say, ‘opening up investigations into the limitations and potentials of the architectural surface.’ Everything is changing - ‘We find ourselves engaged in a nimble dance between builder and designer,’ they say.
