Information
Founded back in 1982 by René Stoos (born 1945), Stoos Architekten was bolstered by the arrival of the younger Stoos, Jann (born 1975) in 2003. Their thought process tries to combine the programatic demands with their desire for 'scenical spaces' - the classic inside/outside approach that blends a building into its surroundings.

Inspiration
The rigorous forms and understated choice of materials make Stoos Architekten's work a natural continuation of classic modernism. Their simple pavilion structures, like the bike shelter in Windisch, are reminiscent of the movement's most iconic pieces, but the often pragmatic choice of materials brings the work down to earth.
Innovation
The House Kern is a near-perfect concrete cube, wedged into the hillside. Its façade is punctuated by a strongly rhythmic arrangement of windows, subtly coloured to contrast with the grey walls. The interior is a mystery, waiting to be unwrapped. 'We use natural and artificial light as space-makers to define spaces, to enhance spaces, to create ambiances,' says René, adding that 'We like subtle spatial, light and colour surprises in a building.' Environmental considerations are at the forefront of their mind, as is the ambition to create something that will last for a long time.
