Casey Brown began life as Dawson Brown Architecture, the internationally acclaimed Australian practice, before evolving into their current form in 2005. Robert Brown, 52, and Caroline Casey, 52, head up a team of four design professionals in their Sydney studio, bringing with them extensive experience of practising architecture around the world.

Inspiration
They're lucky to be practising in a location with an abundance of stunning sites - check out the James-Robertson House, perched on a 45 degree slope overlooking the coast in new South Wales' Pittwater district. This ensures that environmental considerations are at the top of their agenda. As they say, 'Our inspiration derives from the understanding of natural environment and an appreciation of indigenous culture.' Ensuring that their buildings are as self-sufficient as possible will continue to be a major concern, especially when they are remote developments aimed at eco tourists, like the Buchan Point resort in Queensland.

Innovation
With years of experience working on historic buildings, CBA believes it is able to create what it calls 'timeless functionalism… using expressed materials and structure related to a specific site and circumstance'. That means that timber-framed structures happily co-exist with glass and steel pavilions in their eclectic portfolio. Material choices aren't pre-determined, so while copper cladding might work in one location, creating an addition for a historic structure - like the Craigee Lee House extension - requires a contemporary update of traditional wooden craftsmanship.
