Designkommander is a movement active in both theory and practice. Based in London, the core comprises an artist, an architect and an anthropologist. Currently covering the fields of architecture, product, furniture, fashion and film, they have taken part in various international shows and will be exhibiting in Paris and Berlin in 2008. Their operating system is premised on the application of the New Purist theory and its principles. Taking the name – Designkommander - from the author and originator of New Purism, they continue to pursue and apply his thinking. He maintains a working presence within the team, providing insight, commentary and direction.

Inspiration
Through New Purism, Designkommander exists to provide a connection with the real in the context of the digital and virtual era. There are three main principles behind each action; fluidity between the abstract and the recognisable, freedom from functional and mechanical references, and triggering the imagination with objects that operate as stimuli. From a viewer’s standpoint, seemingly abstract form decodes into an identifiable entity; functional components are stripped away and the uncorrupted object takes precedence; the liberated form is instilled with experiential devices that arouse the senses and move one to a state beyond mere observation.
Innovation
It is acknowledged that the gap between fine art and everyday life has collapsed - Designkommander occupies the space in between. Here, the interaction between man and object is explored through the making of the experiential. By earthing the human machine, the movement seeks to re-create meaning in our material culture. Translating the three principles into architecture results in visceral work where distinct volumes and clear concrete geometry almost tips into pure sculpture.
