Variety is a major priority for Ethiopian-born and Uppsala-raised Rahel Belatchew Lerdell (born 1969). Belatchew Lerdell worked as an architect in Paris, Luxembourg and Tokyo before setting up her award-winning business, RB Arkitektur in 2004. She has worked on public projects, as well as numerous private commissions, many of them residential. The practice always tries to identify the uniqueness of each project through extensive analysis of each different programme. Such an approach, she believes, allows for a variety of expressions and architectural solutions.

Inspiration
The site, area and locale are the greatest source of inspiration for Belatchew Lerdell, who says, 'My inspiration lies mainly in the zeitgeist.' The architect is also inspired by other aspects of contemporary culture, especially fashion, contemporary art and photography.
Innovation
Acknowledging the importance of environmental and sustainable issues in the development of architecture, the practice is orientating its design towards incorporating all relevant technologies. It tries to include in its work highly insulated glazing, geothermal and floor heating wherever possible. Belatchew Lerdell predicts that 'various aspects of globalisation will have an even greater impact on the way we live and the houses we build'.
