Michael Antrobus

Graduate Directory 2010

Michael Antrobus’s metal stationery set ‘Ground’ – which includes scissors, set squares, T-squares, tape dispenser and craft knife – grew out of experiments in the Kingston University workshop with pieces of flat steel bar. ‘There wasn’t much drawing involved. I prefer to sketch three-dimensionally: clamping, twisting and pressing. I knew I wanted to produce tools for the home and to keep a utilitarian and raw aesthetic.’ From his initial experiments he progressed to a stationery set produced in ground flat stock – an oil hardened, precision-cut steel that may be too high-spec for mass production. ‘It’s important to me that it is produced in the UK and so all the manufacturers I’m talking to are in the Sheffield metals industry.’

Most inspired by:
‘The clean minimal lines of Sam Hecht’s work and, in contrast, the playfulness of Bertjan Pot.’
