The starting point for Carole Suety’s work is always personal, often relating to her relationships or family. “I start from the personal and then try to make the images symbolic so that the project doesn’t in the end appear to be just about me.” For the Globe de Mariée project she combined the old French tradition of receiving bell jars as wedding presents to store personal memories with the circumstances of her own relationship at the time. “The globes usually contain symbolic items relating to loyalty and happiness, but I wanted to explore something more realistic and with darker tones. I was also exploring the symbol of the globe as a social construct compared with the more animal side of our nature.”
