‘On a blank piece of paper, entire worlds can come alive,’ says Karin Ronmark. ‘Out of nothing, I can create everything. A good illustration is like a doorway into a story, an opening into a bigger world. It’s like magic!’ For Ronmark, the magic has been with her for as long as she can remember; as she quite simply puts it, ‘drawing has always been my way of thinking and exploring ideas.’ Post graduation, she is now putting her down-to-earth-with-a-twist style to good use on a myriad of self-initiated projects, including a collaborative children’s book project about computer games. The dream is, she says, to run a small publishing house and exhibition space, but in the meantime, she can be found garnering inspiration at libraries, bookstores and flea markets. ‘It’s like strolling around among different stories and lives. So many voices mixed together.’

It changes, but I can see the influences from childhood travels. My parents always brought us kids to churches and historical sites all over Europe. I get a lot of inspiration from folklore and religious art – it’s timeless story telling.
