‘Whimsical collages made from interesting bits of paper and my sticker collection,’ is how Joanna Cheung sums up her work. In truth, her style runs the gamut from kitsch to cool. ‘I was always going to do animation or fashion,’ she explains. ‘It was only when I was studying for my foundation degree that I discovered illustration. From there I found my own style and medium, which is collage and mixed media. I'm interested in many aspects of design such as fashion, surface design, graphic design, and it seemed to make sense that with illustration I could pretty much do what I wanted to do.’ This breadth of artistic interest has fed brilliantly into her diverse work; its strong fashion overtones led to a six-month stint working for the fashion brand Gia London. But when it comes to inspiration, she is a true child of the eighties. ‘I love looking at eighties popular culture – I’m a nostalgic person and tend to reminisce about my childhood.’ Well, it’s working for us…
