‘Simple’ is how Alan Clarke describes his work. ‘After studying design for over four years now, I feel that the most engaging pieces of graphic design are just understood straight away – the ones you get there and then. I suppose that’s why I like modernism’s clarity,’ he says. We love his clear and concise style, as evidenced by a series of elegantly succinct posters he created as proposals for the 2012 Olympics; and D&AD evidently approved too – Clarke won the Best In Show gong at the New Blood exhibition and appeared in Creative Review as a result. Nevertheless, he cites his proudest moment as getting into the International Society of Typographic designers – ‘I spent so much time working on that project,’ he recalls. He is currently working on an exhibition on lighthouses for the National Maritime Museum in Cornwall, where he lives and derives much of his inspiration. ‘Living in Cornwall has been a huge contributor to my influences. I also love to go surfing, being outdoors gives me space to step back form my work.’

Most influenced by:
Dieter Rams: for his design ethos and people like Armin Hofmann. Josef Müller Brockmann and Otl Aicher for their considered, simple and effective designs.
