Formed in 2009, The Functionality is a multi-disciplinary design collective consisting of core members, Bartlett graduates Nicholas Wood and William Trossell, and Brown and Yale graduate Andrew Lyon. 'We would like to work for people who share our excitement for producing thoughtful design through research and making, whilst working collaboratively with designers, artists, scientists and craftsmen', they say, while emphasising The Functionality’s openness and spirit of collaboration. Their Papervillain project – a tensile canopy made of 2542 paper hats created out of London’s free press dailies over a period of three weeks - was realised after many studies on the creation of the cable structure’s quilt fabrication at the Secret Garden Festival in Cambridge a few months ago. More installations and exhibitions in the UK and abroad are currently in design, while Trossell and Wood complete a postgraduate degree at the Bartlett.
