Wallpaper* Design Awards 2011

Jonas Elding and Johan Oscarson have made a distinctive mark on this small street in the southern Swedish town of Landskrona. The architects have fully exploited the space, filling an empty plot with a purist slab, deliberately at odds with the ramshackle but charming, mostly low-rise, pitched-roof houses that abut it. Yet detail abounds, primarily in the big picture window in the front façade and the framed terrace at second-floor level. It's not quite a life on display, but the house is more open and expansive than its neighbours. Inside, the plan is almost Japanese in sensibility, with its modest internal courtyard, mesh walkways and stairs, and open-plan arrangement.
Key features: Open plan, purist and simple, yet also warm and inviting
Architects' previous work: Catella office building, Stockholm; Oktavilla design agency, Stockholm
Based: Stockholm
