The Judges Awards

11. Life enhancer of the year

In this age of vitamin-popping, an elegant pillbox has become a basic necessity. Always quick off the mark, Mark Holmes of Minimalux has conjured up the ultimate version: a test tube rendered in solid silver or copper that keeps its contents out of sight. Conceived as part of Minimalux's second collection, inspired by objects found in a laboratory, the pillbox is produced by electroforming (plating metal onto a mould that is later removed), then polished to a fine finish. The pillboxes, along with the rest of the collection, were released for sale online during this year's London Design Festival, meaning any self-medicating individual worldwide could get their hands on one.

Key features: A simple tube, perfectly executed in solid silver or copper, with a cork stopper

About the designer: Mark Holmes, Established & Sons' former design director, launched Minimalux in 2009, focusing on simple, useful small-scale objects made using quality materials
