Wallpaper* Design Awards 2011

Situated on the majestic Passeig de Gràcia, the Mandarin Oriental is set in a midcentury bank completely revamped by local architects Juan Trias de Bes and Carlos Ferrater, and Asturias-born designer Patricia Urquiola. The reception area, hidden away behind Urquiola's signature latticed screens, is accessed via a ramp in the light-filled atrium. Bedrooms are furnished with Urquiola designs, the odd vintage piece and lighting by local firm Javier Marset. Safe doors from the former bank's vault line the walls and ceiling of the Banker's Bar, while the restaurant, Moments, offers a modern Catalan menu devised by Carme Ruscalleda, who has five Michelin stars to her name.
