The Judges Awards

02. Designer of the Year

French designer Inga Sempé caused a stir with a new design at every fair she showed at this year. Her 'Ruché' sofa -- a beechwood frame topped with a quilted cover that looks thrown on, but is actually a complex combination of foam layers and a sprung steel grill -- for Ligne Roset was acclaimed in Köln and Paris in January. Her 'W103' desk lamp, a solidly simple design for Wästberg, was launched in February in Stockholm. Then at Salone del Mobile in April, Sempé showed three products for Moustache. Among them was the 'Guichet' clock; in place of a second hand, hypnotic graphic stripes take one second to move from left to right behind a small aperture on the clock face.
