Wallpaper* Design Awards 2011

While this private house is located in chic Jardims, one of São Paulo's busiest and most central neighbourhoods, its main gates lead you into a green haven of tranquillity. Designed by Isay Weinfeld, one of Brazil's most prominent contemporary architects and an expert in the modern Brazilian domestic interior, the house is a geometric composition of four rectangular concrete-framed boxes. Ample, airy and lusciously furnished with modernist pieces and artwork, the structure's complex includes open-air decks and courtyards, an internal garden, a long pool and generous apertures that open or close, should the owners wish to hide from Brazil's hot sun.
Key features: Combining inside and outside space in a single modernist masterpiece
Architect's previous work: Livraria da Vila, São Paulo; Numero, São Paulo; Fasano Hotel, São Paulo
Based: São Paulo
