The Judges Awards

11. Life enhancer of the year

The inimitable Frédéric Malle made his first foray into home fragrances towards the end of 2009 by developing a range of hyper-realistic scents that were more like fine perfumes than functional air fresheners. Working with celebrated noses Dominique Ropion and Carlos Benaïm, Malle created five different home fragrances: wild rose, lily of the valley, gardenia, lilies, and sweet magnolia. To complement the scents, Malle conjured up an electronic diffuser that delivers the intoxicating floral bouquets with panache. Rendered in his signature red, the rechargeable 'Fleur Mécanique' is not just easy on the eye, but also quiet, simple and wireless.

Key features: The scents make home fragrance more about fine fragrance, while the wireless diffuser is a slick piece of contemporary design

About the perfumer: French perfumer Frédéric Malle commissions some of the world's most respected noses to create his Editions de Parfums series of scents and has also created fragrances for Hermès and Christian Lacroix
