08. Best new women’s fashion collection

As fashion shifted into wistful, genteel mode, Karl Lagerfeld at Fendi injected softness and fluidity into the Roman fashion house. Fur, Fendi's speciality since 1925, is enjoying a renaissance - particularly the type that doesn't boast extreme wealth but instead carries the nonchalance of an old overcoat or outdoorsy jacket. Lagerfeld's rustic-looking A-line gilets and patchwork creations in mink, sable, breitschwanz, leather and suede all had a shrug-on lightness only made possible by the magic fingers of Fendi's craftsmen. Cut-away jackets, 1970s-tinged midi-length skirts in soft ochre tweeds and charcoal wool, and mid-calf wellington boots completed the autumn/winter Fendi look.
