08. Best new women’s fashion collection

It is a wonderful thing when a designer creates a collection that seems to fill a void. Phoebe Philo did just that with her second offering at Parisian fashion house Céline. Her autumn/winter collection was built on shearling capes, funnel-neck pea coats, lace T-shirts and slit-side skirts that were timeless, pure and seemingly effortless. Behind the clean-cut lines is an exacting mind that will toil for days over the width of the lapel and the gradation of her now much coveted trousers - straight and cropped for autumn/winter. Philo knows what grown-up women want, whether it is the 'Classic' anti-it bag, or a modestly heeled black calf boot made special with a matt metallic veneer.
